Prairies are a type of grassland found in the mid-central United States. They have moderate temperatures.
Grasses are the dominant plant type in prairie ecosystems. In tall-grass prairies, big bluestem and Indian grass are the main grasses. These grasses can reach height of eight feet or more. You also will find many varieties of herbs, as well as purple coneflower, cardinal flower, and other flowering plants. Trees are present, though there are not many. The prairie is home to many different types of animal species. They include bison (buffalo), hawks, foxes, ferrets, owls, prairie dogs, insects, earthworms, many types of birds, badgers, butterflies, snakes, jackrabbits and many others. The prairie is a very dry place whose water sources are not always visible. While there are a few small lakes and rivers, most of the water comes from deep within the ground where rain water has soaked down into a reservoir. Plants use their roots to suck up this water, and many of the animals in this ecosystem get the water they need from eating the plants.
