A pond is a body of water shallow enough to support rooted plants. Many times plants grow all the way across a shallow pond. Water temperature is fairly even from top to bottom and changes with air temperature. There is little wave action and the bottom is usually covered with mud.
Plants like lilies, pond-weed, grass, bushes and trees can grow along the pond's edge. Small non-flowering plants called algae are often present in and around the water's surface. The area in and around ponds is home to many different types of animals. Fish, snails, mosquitoes, mussels, ducks, turtles, frogs, tadpoles, earthworms, birds and even small snakes can be found in pond ecosystems.
